Nicole's European Fairytale

French scattered through Vanuatu

It might not be France or an EU country but Vanuatu was once a French settlement and it’s still possible to hear and see little bits of the past today. I’m currently enjoying the Christmas break in Port Vila, Vanuatu and I have to say that if it’s a relaxing destination you’re ever after then this is THE PLACE! Gorgeous beaches, an underwater post office, islands to kayak to, snorkeling, scuba diving, market strolls and shopping. And that’s the obvious stuff, there’s also hair braiding, coconut husking and fresh water springs/falls to explore.

The main language spoken is Bislama, although the majority speak English and a portion of the population are fluent in French too. There are hints of French on billboards and a few restaurants and bakeries are appropriately named (ie. au peche mignon). There are also a few French travelers at the resort and attending some of the same activities.

Anyway, whether you’re after a taste of France or a relaxing tropical holiday, Port Vila is the spot!

So what are you doing this Christmas break?

I agree with you r/e Vanuatu though – it’s such a pretty and relaxed place. Quite rugged too, which I liked – it’s not the big fake song and dance you get in some of the more westernized parts of the Pacific. Everyone is so nonchalant.
